Dr. Hirschorn has been the director of radiology informatics at Staten Island University Hospitals for the past 10 years. He is also a researcher in imaging informatics at Mass General Hospital in Boston and the director of the annual New York Medical Imaging Informatics Symposium (NYMISS), which is coming up on September 16. He spoke with DOTmed News about what to expect at this year's show.
DMN: Dr. Hirschorn, please give us a snapshot of the symposium.
DH: NYMISS is a great place to explore the best practices in medical imaging information systems, including Picture Archive and Communications Systems (PACS), Radiology and Cardiology Information Systems (RIS and CIS), speech recognition reporting systems, vendor neutral archives (VNAs) and the image enabled electronic medical record (EMR).

DMN: What type of professionals should attend the show?
DH: I would say any physician involved in imaging, and certainly radiologists and oncologists, systems administrators for PACS or RIS, technologists, and anyone in training in these fields. Those who attend also have a great opportunity to meet and network with their peers in the Tri-state area and find out what other people are doing.
DSMN: How long has the symposium been in existence, and what does it cost to attend.
DH: This is our fourth year running the event, and it's been getting bigger and better every year. We expect over 200 attendees. The registration fee is just $50 and I would encourage people to sign up on our website now, it's
