BEDFORD, Mass. - Hologic, Inc. (NASDAQ: HOLX), a leading provider of state-of-the-art digital imaging systems directed towards women's health, is the first digital mammography manufacturer to receive equipment "Type Approval" for its Selenia
TM digital mammography and SecurView
TM systems to be used in the Flemish part of the Belgium breast screening program. The Flemish program is the first screening program in Europe to implement an equipment "Type Approval" based on the new European Breast Cancer Network (EBCN) guidelines for quality assurance in mammography screening (4th edition EUREF) - a set of quality standards and test procedures specifically for digital mammography systems.
All components of the Selenia digital mammography and SecurView systems (image acquisition, image processing, and image display) passed all relevant tests, meeting the new digital mammography screening "Type Approval" requirements. "Type Approval" also means the systems passed an image quality evaluation by an expert panel of radiologists. The European Breast Cancer Network believes that non-compliance with the new guidelines can result in a seriously lower detection rate for microcalcifications and/or low contrast lesions.
"To be the first company to receive an approval based on the recently released guidelines is clearly a milestone for Hologic in Europe." says Mark Duerst, Senior Vice President for International Operations. "Hologic is known as the technology and market leader in analog and digital mammography in the United States. Passing the new, more stringent European standards, marks Hologic as the technology leader in the European market as well."
