“To me, that’s bringing the radiologist back into the clinical team,” said Recht.

Another way radiologists could demonstrate their value to referring physicians is through more sophisticated patient reports. Instead of being just words on the page, Recht would like to see key images or hyperlinks to images in those reports.

There is no question that technology improves a radiology department’s efficiency. But Recht believes departments will need one large, integrated system that not only adapts to radiologists, but to the hospital’s entire electronic medical record system. Further, the system should do more than get the right images to the right person — it should also include information that technologists and administrators need to know. After all, it’s going to take a team effort to make a radiology department more efficient.
