“Triage diagnostics in medicine and also package inspection in a security-rich environment like that,” Fox says. “That’s what we’re bringing to market.”
Market plateau
“The introduction of wireless flat panel detectors about four years ago completely changed the portable X-ray market,” says Jason Launders, Director of Operations at ECRI Institute. “There are a lot of advantages of the digital detector. However, before the wireless detector, hospitals wanting a digital system could choose between a tethered FPD or a CR cassette. But with the wireless FPDs you can use your portable system and get the same quality as your fixed room systems with all of the workflow efficiencies.

Launders says that standardization is another potential advantage to be realized with the shift to wireless detectors. With the knowledge gained in recent years, it’s clearly advantageous for facilities to have technologists using the same interface.
The mobile X-ray market has been booming in recent years, as OEMs have put a glut of new models on the market and equipment purchasers at hospitals and other facilities have pulled the trigger and replaced older mobile units with newer, digital technology, says Kirk Ising, director of research strategy at health care equipment research firm KLAS.
“I think the buying will still be pretty serious for a year or two, and after this initial spike it will cool down,” Ising says.
Some facilities, especially if there isn’t a high volume of bedside imaging, are retrofitting old equipment with wireless detectors. While this can help cash-strapped facilities save money, it can be challenging to deal with two vendors if something goes wrong with the system. “A couple folks have had to go back and forth” between vendors, Ising says. “If you’re high volume, it makes sense to go new just to have all the benefits of the system.”
