The standards are rigorous and focus on three elements - reputation, death rates and other care-related factors such as patient services and the way in which nursing care is assessed. In 2004, for the first time in the ranking's 15 year history, researchers added a "Nurse Magnet" criterion to their analysis. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program©
TM is widely accepted as the gold standard of excellence in nursing care.
Of the 14 hospitals singled out as Honor Roll centers - hospitals that excelled in six or more specialties - four of the top five were Magnet hospitals.
