Under Gillen's leadership as vice president since 1999, Siemens' MRI Division has redefined how MRI scans are conducted by introducing Tim© (Total imaging matrix) technology, the MAGNETOM Avanto©, MAGNETOM Espree^TM, MAGNETOM Trio© and MAGNETOM C!© MRI systems. According to a study in the August issue of the journal Radiology, the number of inconclusive diagnostic imaging exams has doubled in the last 15 years due to the size of today's patients. With more than two-thirds of Americans overweight or obese, this presents a real challenge to the medical industry. Siemens' MRI solutions, such as the MAGNETOM Espree, overcome such obstacles with a larger opening for patients and more power than traditional open MRI systems.

Gillen has led a restructuring of the MRI Division focusing on research and development to continually improve the company's technology and customer service. Today, the company has more than doubled its MRI business.

The "President's Leadership Award" was created by Thomas McCausland, immediate past CEO, Siemens Medical Solutions USA, to acknowledge leaders within Siemens for their demonstrated leadership and dedication to the company and industry. Whether direct or indirect, their presence and active roles in the company have consistently contributed to success in every arena. This distinction has only been awarded four times, including Gillen.
