MALVERN, Pa. - Faced with an industry demand for addressing physical and physiological challenges such as obesity and claustrophobia, Siemens Medical Solutions (www.usa.siemens.com/medical) constantly works to ensure all patients have access to life-saving magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies. At the helm of these efforts are talented executives who deliver the most sophisticated medical imaging technologies available. In recognition of her leadership prowess, Nancy Gillen recently received the "President's Leadership Award," the highest distinguished award within Siemens.

Under Gillen's leadership as vice president since 1999, Siemens' MRI Division has redefined how MRI scans are conducted by introducing Tim© (Total imaging matrix) technology, the MAGNETOM Avanto©, MAGNETOM EspreeTM, MAGNETOM Trio© and MAGNETOM C!© MRI systems. According to a study in the August issue of the journal Radiology, the number of inconclusive diagnostic imaging exams has doubled in the last 15 years due to the size of today's patients. With more than two-thirds of Americans overweight or obese, this presents a real challenge to the medical industry. Siemens' MRI solutions, such as the MAGNETOM Espree, overcome such obstacles with a larger opening for patients and more power than traditional open MRI systems.

"Over the past five years, MRI has seen a resurgence in interest due to technology advancements that increase patient comfort and decrease exam times while improving image quality," said Nancy Gillen, vice president, MRI Division, Siemens Medical Solutions. "Siemens hears the needs of doctors and their patients, and constantly works to address them. This award validates that we provide the desired solutions, helping patients today and tomorrow."

The "President's Leadership Award" was created by Thomas McCausland, immediate past CEO, Siemens Medical Solutions USA, to acknowledge leaders within Siemens for their demonstrated leadership and dedication to the company and industry. Whether direct or indirect, their presence and active roles in the company have consistently contributed to success in every arena. This distinction has only been awarded four times, including Gillen.
