Emergency experience lasts a lifetime
York Hospital is a full service community teaching hospital serving approximately 450,000 residents of York and surrounding communities. A member of the prestigious Council of Teaching Hospitals (COTH), the hospital is a major clinical site of the Penn State University College of Medicine. The Hospital sponsors residency programs in Dentistry, Family Practice, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Transitional Year, as well as hosting visiting orthopedic residents from Memorial Hospital of York. Residents from the Emergency Medicine and Family Practice programs also staff the Pediatric Resident Service, which is supervised by attending pediatricians.

Our Emergency Medicine Residency is a three year program in a PGY 1, 2, 3 format, leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is fully accredited by the ACGME-RRC.

The residency is based at York Hospital, a busy community teaching hospital and provides additional patient care experiences at the Penn State University, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Chambersburg Hospital, the Inpatient Toxicology Unit at Harrisburg Hospital, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. These diverse centers offer an outstanding breadth of training experiences.

The residency is clinically oriented, stressing patient contact and decision making at all levels of training. We take great pride in telling other physicians from around the country, that our residents are exceptionally well-prepared and ready for clinical practice.

A Balanced Approach To Residency Training

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program has a broad clinical and academic orientation drawing upon the strengths of the partner institutions. The diverse university and community hospital patient populations create an ideal training environment, allowing the resident to train in the full spectrum of emergency practice - university, community teaching and community EDs.

Resident Experience - A Foundation for the Future

Emergency Medicine residents, faculty and staff are integral members of the Regional Trauma Team. EM residents are actively involved as Trauma Team Leaders during the day and senior level Emergency Medicine residents are responsible for airway management in all trauma patients. Residents are afforded exposure to a wide variety of clinical cases, including a large number of patients with acute coronary syndromes. A helipad just outside the ED entrance allows easy transfer of patients both to and from the hospital. Patients are flown to the ED and the hospital both from the scenes of traumatic accidents and in transfer from referring hospitals. Residents have active involvement in air and ground EMS activities, and field the majority of the over 4000 EMS calls annually. All residents are certified as Medical Center Command physicians during the EM-2 year.

Teaching

Teaching is a key focus of our residency. Residents are exposed to formal teaching during yearly core competency lectures and all present a formal Grand Rounds lecture during the EM-3 year. Senior residents also precept junior residents and medical students. in the Emergency Department. They also participate in weekly lectures/workshops for students.

* Residents gain valuable experience while working in our busy ED. Communication and presentation skills are enhanced through interactions with both residents and attending physician consultants. The mixture of private community physicians, as well as full resident coverage in the major specialty areas, allows appropriate dispositions to be made easily. The overall experience at York Hospital favors the development of strong clinical skills, and a dynamic framework of medical knowledge on which to base future medical learning.
