Q&A with Larry Coomes, CEO of Palm Beach Garden Medical Center

by Sean Ruck, Contributing Editor | December 11, 2014
From the December 2014 issue of HealthCare Business News magazine

HCBN: How popular are the new minimally invasive procedures Palm Beach Gardens offers for valve replacements?
LC:
I think they’re very popular especially for those who have no other surgical options — they couldn’t undergo the anesthesia or recovery time. So this option can really give them a new lease on life. People are scheduling and traveling to us for this.

HCBN: Are there any other procedures new to your facility?

Ensure critical devices are ready to go

Keep biomedical devices ready to go, so care teams can be ready to care for patients. GE HealthCare’s ReadySee™ helps overcome frustrations due to lack of network and device visibility, manual troubleshooting, and downtime.

LC:
We just started doing a new procedure called mitral clip — it’s a pretty big deal, it effects about 10 percent of adults age 60 and over — we just did our first successful procedure last week.

HCBN: LeapFrog Group has given your facility an “A” rating in patient safety three consecutive times. How does your staff reach this level of safety and maintain it?
LC:
We’ve also been recognized by Joint Commission as a top hospital. The key to that, we’re a very data-driven organization and we monitor that every day. If we see trends going in the wrong direction, we’re able to fix it. We also have a very committed group of staff and doctors dedicated to the patients.
