The Division of Pharmacy Services at Marshfield Clinic is actively developing a pharmacy practice residency program that will begin its inaugural academic year on July 1, 2007 with the goal of obtaining American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP)-accreditation. This 12-month program provides the necessary opportunities for highly motivated pharmacists to achieve their professional goals.

Pharmacy Practice Experiences:

During pharmacy practice rotations, the resident assumes the responsibility of all aspects of patient drug therapy, including:

* Medication-use assessment and monitoring
* Conducting patient interviews and patient medication counseling
* Advising physicians, nurses, and patients on appropriate drug use
* Active participation in conferences and journal clubs
* Providing lectures on drug therapy to medical, pharmacy, and nursing staff

Potential rotations include:

* Drug Information
* Managed Care
* Outpatient Cardiology
* Pharmacy Management
* Clinical Informatics
* Community Pharmacy
* Dermatology
* Outpatient Oncology
* Internal Medicine
* Quality Improvement
* Supply Management
* Community Health Care/Indigent Drug Program
* Additional outpatient clinical sub-specialties to be determined

Longitudinal Experiences:

During residency training, valuable experience is obtained in the many integrated facets of a Pharmacy Service at Marshfield Clinic including:

* Investigational Drug Program and Research - Each resident is required to complete a research project. Working with the Program Director and Preceptors, the resident will identify a meaningful research project that is manageable in a one-year period of time. The residency research project is identified early in the year. The goal will be to present the research project at the ASHP Midyear Clinical meeting and at the Residency Conference.

* Monthly participation in Marshfield Clinic Drug Evaluation Committee meetings
* Participation in one additional committee throughout the year (e.g. Patient Safety)
* Medication Use Evaluation
* Contribution to Marshfield Clinic's monthly pharmacy publication (Pharmacy Capsule)
* Participation in Pharmacy Journal Club and Pharmacy Continuing Education presentations
* Staffing Experience

These experiences will help the resident develop the skills needed to communicate effectively and to organize, prioritize, and manage pharmacy s ervices.
