The Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program
Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center's Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program welcome four new residents each year. Oakwood offers the unique opportunity for residents to develop their skills in a large community medical center while providing firsthand exposure to all subspecialty areas. Oakwood residents also participate in structured research programs. Altogether, this residency combines the best features of both academic training programs and community-based programs.
Oakwood residents work closely with subspecialists in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Urogynecology, and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility throughout their training. We have generous clinical volume in all areas, with over 4,000 major and minor gynecologic procedures and over 5,500 deliveries performed at Oakwood every year. We also offer ambulatory exposure in resident continuity clinic, Family Practice clinics, private physician offices, and subspecialty clinics.
Oakwood's residency program offers truly comprehensive training in all facets of women's healthcare. We believe that Oakwood is the ideal environment in which residents can acquire a comprehensive knowledge of obstetrics and gynecology and prepare for a career in general practice, subspecialty, or academic medicine. We invite you to browse this website, which will help to familiarize you with our program and what we have to offer.
Obstetric Experience
Designated a Level III perinatal referral center, Oakwood regularly receives high-risk maternal transports from area hospitals. As a result, residents are consistently exposed to a variety of high-risk perinatal conditions, and work closely with Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists to develop experience in managing these pregnancies. By participating in antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care of high-risk patients, residents become skilled in managing a variety of obstetric challenges.
Clinic patients are directly managed by the chief resident of the service, under supervision of the program faculty. In addition, a considerable portion of the hospital's patient population comes from the practices of Oakwood's private faculty, who provide invaluable exposure. Residents take an active role in formulating plans of care for both private and clinic patients. Residents receive ample training in forceps and vacuum deliveries, with approximately 500 operative vaginal procedures performed yearly.
