The system ensures accurate targeting through the utilization of Philips CT technology. "That approach allows us to see the tumor in real time before the treatment, and potentially adjust the treatment based on the changes that we monitor," said Marash.

P-Cure currently has a few contracts in the works, but Marash was unable to disclose any of the details at this time. He and his team hope that by cutting the cost of proton therapy they can increase access to it, and help expedite the process of illustrating benefits, so that the technology can be embraced on a larger level.

"The objective is to provide small footprint solution to almost all radiation oncologists," said Marash. "In that way, eventually, the price between image-guided X-ray and image-guided proton will equalize, so [for example] the user can have a TrueBeam in one bunker and a P-Cure system in the next — not to decide what's better but just what solution fits a given clinical case."
