Training Programs in Pathology

by Akane Naka, Project Manager | December 04, 2006

The duration of the program is a minimum of two years. The program is structured such that, during the first few months, the fellow is prepared for clinical service through didactic teachings and rotations through areas of the clinical laboratory. Following the first few months, the fellow will become active in clinical service by assisting with clinical projects and on-call responsibilities for the laboratory. Trainees will become involved in research projects during this time and may elect to continue projects beyond the required two years (provided funding is available). Fellows will also participate and attend weekly seminars in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Additionally, fellows will be required to attend the resident training course in clinical pathology that runs on a two-year cycle. The following section details the major components of the training program.

Support for the program is derived from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of Emory University. The program is accredited by the ComACC.

Surgical Pathology Fellowship

Description:
This 1-year fellowship program during the fourth year is directed by Dr. Shobha Sharma and has the goal of developing special competence in surgical pathology or an area of surgical pathology for individuals planning an academic career. Surgical pathology activities are centered at Emory University Hospital. All subspecialty areas of surgical and medical pathology are represented by the pathology case material in the Emory Health-care system. The combined number of surgical specimens processed is over 60,000 annually. Depending on the career goals of the fellows, diagnostic and research activities may center on surgical pathology or a subspecialty area such as pulmonary, renal, soft tissue, urologic and gynecologic and breast pathology, and special procedures including immunohistochemistry and cytometry. Fellows are responsible for independent diagnostic activities (supervised by pathologists), including frozen section consultations; instruction of residents and medical students; and the planning and execution of a research project. Research resources include electron microscopy, image and flow cytometry, immunohistology, in situ hybridization, polymerase chain reaction, and computer facilities.
