Specialization is driving the hospital bed market

by Jennifer Rioux, Contributing Reporter | April 12, 2016

Supporting staff improves the hospital environment
Bain of LINET asserts that features of their beds go directly to supporting staff to do their job in a better, safer way. “Repositioning patients previously required multiple nurses using laborious manual movement. We designed the bed frame to move the bed side to side on a platform, allowing gravity to assist the nurse in moving the patient. Patients are heavier and sicker and it’s more difficult for nurses to do their job. The bed frame can become the epicenter of patient care. We developed a system that’s like a conveyor belt using the sheet on top of the mattress. Instead of manual handling, the sheet slides up on the mattress to reposition the patient. It’s more comfortable for the patient and preserves their dignity. We want to bring this feature down into the $8,000-$10,000 range per bed. The technology used to be only for the $20,000 product, but we want to bring the technology to everybody.”

It’s all about patient satisfaction

Hospital bed features and capabilities affect reimbursement, via patient satisfaction surveys as well as fall and infection prevention. Bed manufacturers are fully aware of this and are designing their products to optimize patient comfort while making patient management as easy as possible for the staff. Industry professionals indicated that the return on investment for high-tech hospital beds with data monitoring features or unique design elements could be impressive, as long as their patients feel they had a positive experience.
