Psychiatry Residency Program
Baylor College of Medicine offers some of the best teaching facilities and clinical opportunities for psychiatric education anywhere in the United States. The Menninger Department of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine utilizes new facilities at the Houston Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Ben Taub General Hospital (a county hospital system) and at several private, not for profit, hospital affiliations in both General and Child Psychiatry such as The Menninger Clinic of Houston, The Methodist Hospital, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and Texas Children's Hospital. The central administrative offices of the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and the Baylor Psychiatry Clinic are located in The Houston Medical Center Building where the residency also holds didactic seminars three times a week for each residency class level.
First and second year residents rotate through the affiliated institutions in the Texas Medical Center: The Methodist Hospital, Ben Taub General Hospital, the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and Texas Children's Hospital. Third year residents are assigned to outpatient facilities for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness (at the Houston VA Medical Center or Ben Taub General Hospital), for outpatient psychotherapy (to the Baylor Psychiatry Clinic) and to a variety of community agencies or subspecialty clinics within the Texas Medical Center and the greater Houston community. Fourth year residents choose elective and selective rotations available within the Texas Medical Center, such at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital Consultation/Liaison Service, the Baylor Sleep Disorders Center, the Post Traumatic Stress Disorders Center at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affair Medical Center and the Intensive Outpatient Program at the Ben Taub General Hospital Psychiatry Clinic. Other elective rotations in the fourth year take place outside the Medical Center, such as at the Menninger Clinic of Houston or NASA.
