by Akane Naka, Project Manager | December 26, 2006

Fellowship Training

For many years, the department has offered a fully subscribed fellowship in Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry based at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. This fellowship program is now under the direction of Dr. James Flack. It has been a springboard to academic careers and prestigious private practice positions for its graduates.

Psychoanalytic Training

The faculty of the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute are all active members of the Baylor faculty. Furthermore, formal psychoanalytic training is available through the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute, which is approved by the Board on Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association. After the second year of psychiatric residency, the resident is eligible to apply for candidate status to the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute. Personal (training) analysis begins with one of the training analysts in the Houston-Galveston area. Formal class work begins at a later date and requires four years. Shortly after beginning course work, the candidate may begin the psychoanalytic treatment of patients. Personal analysis, supervision for the required minimum of three cases, and all course work are available to the medical center area. The HGPI also offers a two-year Advanced Studies in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Course. Many residents avail themselves of this outstanding educational experience. Glen Gabbard, M.D. serves as the director of Psychotherapy Education for the general psychiatry residency program and was recently named the Brown Foundation Chair for Psychoanalysis in the department. For further details, consult the Bulletin of the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute.

Research Opportunities for Residents

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences offers a wide range of opportunities for clinical and basic neuroscience research. The department faculty have interests in molecular biology, genetics, cellular and systems neuroscience, neuropharmacology, psychoneuroendocrinology, geriatric psychiatry, mood disorders, schizophrenia, childhood trauma, and health services research. The department has two mechanisms for a psychiatry resident to receive research training and experience - the Resident Research Track and the Resident Fellowship Track. The Resident Research Track offers the resident an opportunity to do clinical research during the third and fourth year general curriculum while the Resident Fellowship Track is a separate match and is a five to six year combined psychiatry/research track which provides the opportunity for intensive involvement in basic or clinical research.
