Even though the Mammomat Inspiration is the first breast tomosynthesis solution on the market to demonstrate superior results to 2-D as a stand-alone exam, the company is aware that many physicians will continue to use it as an adjunct to 2-D exams.
“In the near future, I don’t see [physicians] adopting this new technique of imaging,” said Okken. “I think over a span of 10 years, this will be the new standard of care and patients will get 3-D mammography, and there will be no need for 2-D examinations.”

Siemens’ Tomosynthesis Only Option is available on both its Mammomat Inspiration and Mammomat Inspiration Prime Edition digital mammography systems. No changes have been made to the systems, so physicians can still continue performing breast tomosynthesis as an adjunct to 2-D mammography.
The Mammomat Inspiration with Tomosynthesis Option was FDA approved in April of 2015 for being used in conjunction with the 2-D mammography option.
