NEW YORK, NY – June 9, 2016 /Press Release/ –– Mount Sinai Queens welcomes community residents to its expanded and upgraded Stavros Niarchos Foundation Emergency Department (ED), located on the corner of Crescent Street and 30th Road.

The ED, nearly five times the size of its predecessor, allows the hospital to grow with the communities of western Queens and beyond as they undergo sustained residential and commercial development. The new ED is the first step in the opening of the $175 million Mount Sinai Queens expansion project, which broke ground in October 2013. Subsequent phases will open soon, including a new outpatient Imaging center; a large, multi-specialty physician practice to be called Mount Sinai Doctors, Queens; new, expanded operating rooms; and an Interventional Radiology Suite.

A significant gift from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation was the first in the philanthropic campaign to support the expansion and rebuilding of Mount Sinai Queens. NK Architects and Davis Brody Bond LLP served as architects; the builder is Skanska USA.

The 20,000-square-foot ED, with a glass-enclosed, expansive entrance and waiting area, features a combination of private rooms and patient bays, a separate pediatric emergency area with a family-friendly waiting room, a cardiac and critical care resuscitation room, bariatric- and dialysis-capable rooms, and a separate covered ambulance entrance. Wi-Fi service is available throughout the ED, and individual televisions are at all bedsides for patients. The Mount Sinai Queens ED treated more than 51,000 patients in 2015.

Mount Sinai Queens is a New York State Department of Health-certified Stroke Center and the only Joint Commission-designated Primary Stroke Center in Queens. To further elevate stroke care, the new ED is equipped with dedicated X-ray equipment and a state-of-the-art CT scanner to expedite stroke diagnosis and treatment, which is crucial for improving patient outcomes.
