LOUVAIN-LA-NEUVE, BELGIUM, 4 August 2016 – IBA (Ion Beam Applications S.A.), the world’s leading provider of proton therapy and radiopharmacy solutions, today announces that Zevacor Molecular and IBA have completed acceptance testing for the Cyclone® 70 system installed at Noblesville, Indiana. The cyclotron reached full beam power (700μA) at full energy only 10 months after delivery of the accelerator. The Cyclone® 70 is now fully operational for radioisotope production.

The main focus of the first 70 MeV cyclotron will be the commercial manufacture of Strontium-82 to ensure an ample, stable United States-based supply of Strontium-82/Rubidium-82 generators for use in the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease.

Bruno Scutnaire, President of IBA RadioPharma Solutions commented, “We are proud that the full commissioning has been performed ahead of schedule thanks to the excellent collaboration between Zevacor Molecular and the IBA team of experts in high energy cyclotrons. IBA is the only company able to provide this level of expertise and success with a 70 MeV cyclotron.”

“The collaboration with IBA on this project has been great from the start, said Zevacor Molecular’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, John Zehner. IBA worked closely with our management team to provide the timely information needed to complete this complicated project ahead of schedule by several months. Our expectations have been exceeded in both the technical support and equipment specifications. We definitely recommend IBA for the supply of high energy cyclotrons.”

Zevacor Molecular is an independently owned US healthcare firm that manufactures and distributes PET (Positron Emission Tomography) and SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) radiopharmaceuticals. Zevacor Molecular will introduce the first commercial medical 70 MeV Cyclotron in the United States in order to stabilize the domestic supply of medical isotopes needed to diagnose and treat critical illnesses. The IBA Cyclone® 70 will have the ability to provide year round production of isotopes used mainly in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Although the project is focused on Strontium (Sr-82), which is the raw material for Rubidium (Rb-82) generators, it also opens up several research isotopes currently not widely available in the United States.
