Drive CT scanner
Siemens Healthineers has received FDA approval for a high-performance dual source CT system that is designed to conduct better lung scans and pediatric CT exams.

The SOMATOM Drive's speed allows it to perform pediatric scans with no sedation. It also uses the lowest radiation doses for these patients because of its Stellar Infinity detector, integrated iterative reconstruction capabilities, and use of very low kV levels.

The system’s technology also enables CT lung scans to be performed at a very low dose, which is useful for screening purposes. The X-ray tube voltages are adjustable in 10 kV increments ranging from 70 kV to 140 kV, so the clinician can customize the voltage and dose for each individual patient.

The SOMATOM Drive’s new Straton MX Sigma X-ray tubes and Sigma generators improve the beam focusing and enable exams with high energy level and low voltages. Patients who are either critically ill or have impaired kidney function benefit from lower voltages, since less contrast is required.

The system is also ideal for elderly patients with undiagnosed chest pain and breathing difficulties because they are able to breathe freely during the exam. The cardiac scan can be done in one heartbeat, which means that beta-blocks might not be needed to slow some patients’ heartbeat.

Workflow also has the potential to be improved in the radiology department. Since less contrast is needed for patients with poor kidney function, the preparation and follow-up time that’s usually required can be reduced.

Also, anesthetic support and other intensive medical care may not be required since the scanner can perform exams without sedation.

The scanner can also be used for oncology applications, spinal diagnostics and orthopedic exams. Its Dual Energy mode can help clinicians tell the difference between tissue and bone.
