Highlights:
Emergency imaging is a constantly changing field that presents unique diagnostic challenges. Many of the newer developments challenge time-honored procedures and techniques. This annual course seeks to combine the best ideas and practices of conventional medicine, identify cost-effective techniques, as well as current research findings for new treatment modalities and some of the controversies that have arisen because of them. The emphasis will be on the practical, rather than the esoteric aspects of imaging. Based on suggestions made by past conference registrants, this year's conference will focus on Aortic and Great Vessel Emergencies; Emergency Neurointervention; Spine Emergencies; Trauma to the Elderly; Vertebral Trauma; Pseudofractures; Bowel and Mesenteric Injury; MDCT of Diaphragm and Solid Organ Injury; Imaging of Penetrating Injury to the Torso; Complications of Orthopaedic Hardware; Legal Issues; Craniocerebral Trauma; Child Abuse; and Risk Management and Error Reduction. This conference will be presented by a faculty of internationally known radiologists under the auspices of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The course is designed to provide practicing radiologists, emergency physicians and radiology and emergency residents information on current concepts regarding emergency imaging. At the conclusion of the conference, participants will be able to recognize the radiographic signs of emergency conditions and indications for further imaging; construct a workable differential diagnosis for musculoskeletal trauma, facial injuries, chest and abdominal injuries, cerebral and spinal emergencies; understand the pathophysiology of the above disorders; distinguish between conditions requiring further evaluation and treatment and those that do not; and discuss legal issues in emergency radiology.
