ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Three medical imaging and radiation therapy research projects have been selected to receive funding from the ASRT Foundation this fall. Made possible by generous donations from the R.T. community these grant opportunities ensure that research in the medical imaging and radiation therapy profession is being conducted by professionals in the field.
Twice a year, in the spring and fall, the Foundation accepts grant proposals and awards grants of up to $10,000 to help improve the quality and safety of patient care.
The recipients of the 2016 fall research grants are:

Melanie Dempsey, Ph.D., R.T.(R)(T), CMD, FAAMD, of Virginia Commonwealth University, along with co-investigator Timmerie Cohen, Ph.D., R.T.(R)(T), CMD. They received first-year grant funds totaling $9,983.40 to begin their research project, "Evaluating Secondary Thyroid Dose in Total Breast Irradiation."
Tracy Herrmann, M.Ed., R.T.(R), of the University of Cincinnati, Blue Ash College. She received grant funds totaling $856 to conduct her research project, "The Success of African American Students in Medical Imaging: A Transformative Mixed Methods Study."
Roman Rodriguez, B.S., R.T.(T), of Baylor Scott & White Health-Waxahachie Medical Center, along with co-investigator Tomile Rostockyj, B.S., R.T.(T). They received grant funds totaling $10,000 for their research project, "Optimization of Workload Levels for High Risk Radiotherapy Procedures."
"We are excited to be a part of empowering these radiologic technologists and radiation therapists to discover valuable new information, improve workplace efficiency, and deliver quality patient outcomes," said ASRT Foundation Executive Vice President Liana Watson. "Because of the generous support of donors these R.T.s will be able to add to the general body of knowledge and help advance the profession. It shows the deep commitment that our donors have to the medical imaging and radiation therapy community."
