Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency program
The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency program is designed to train specialists in all aspects of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Residents will gain extensive experience in a myriad of medical cases. Residents may help customize patient treatment programs from an almost limitless choice of services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, and psychological services.
The residency program is individualized as much as possible to allow each resident to develop his/her special interests. A resident is taught by the attending physiatrist through demonstration and observation on a one-to-one basis. A resident completes a pertinent history and does a thorough physical and neurological examination as necessary, emphasizing muscle testing, range of joint motion, disability evaluation, electrodiagnostic procedures and other areas. Residents are taught modalities and how to prescribe therapy.
Inpatient experiences, particularly at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation, are valuable educational opportunities for residents to learn physiatric management for a diversity of patients. Outpatient rotations at Baylor facilities and rotations to Methodist Medical Center and to Parkland Memorial Hospital offer educational training opportunities in other types of practice areas.
Conferences
Residents in the program attend Grand Rounds, which are held every second Tuesday of the month. They also attend Journal Club, a conference hosted by a faculty member, which is held every third Wednesday of each month.
Residents may also attend up to six weeks of educational conferences outside the program during the three years of residency training. This conference leave must be pre-approved by the program director as being appropriate to the resident's level of training.
Research
Over the course of the program, each resident completes a clinical research project under the guidance of the PM&R Graduate Education Committee.
