a) A one page proposal from the resident describing the research project envisioned.
b) A letter written and signed by the faculty mentor outlining the esearch training experience intended for the resident, with discussionof how this project will facilitate the particular resident's potentialfor an academic career. The letter should include the anticipated timecommitment from the resident (number of months needed, as well as thedaily activities of the resident), and also the resources andexperience that the faculty member will bring to bear to facilitate theproject. The expected frequency and format for mentoring interactionbetween the faculty member and the resident should be statedexplicitly. The letter should also articulate the expectation that theexperience will foster the accumulation of data to be used (at aminimum) for submission of an abstract to a national or regional meeting.
c) An updated C.V. from both the faculty mentor and the resident.
5. A monthly evaluation will be provided from the mentor regarding the resident's progress. The residency office will provide a form that thefaculty member can return by email.
6. It is anticipated that residents participating in this program will agree to periodically update the Department on their research progress in a general forum, such as Case Conference, M & M, or another suitable venue.Participating residents will also be required to make a formalpresentation of their project at the Anesthesiology Research Forum, held annually.
7. To maximize the benefit of option 1 (the 6-monthresearch experience) for purposes of launching an academic career, residents should strongly consider undertaking an additional fellowship training experience in a clinical subspecialty, which would allow synergistic extension of the mentored research training period (seeItem B. below). The Department encourages applicants to indicate their longer-term fellowship training interests, if any, in their proposalfor the 6-month option. The program will work with the applicant to develop an integrated clinical and research training program thatincorporates the final year of residency and advanced fellowshiptraining, if desired.
