ASTRO Redesigns, Launches New Web Site

by Barbara Kram, Editor | February 19, 2007
ASTRO has redesigned its
website and added
education features
The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) has a new look; the Society has redesigned its member Web site. The new site, launched this month, offers plenty of resources for our members and community with several new features and better technology, making the site more user-friendly.

ASTRO's new Web site includes a redesigned Meeting and Education section, with up-to-date information on the educational content of meetings, registration and housing; a new Job Placement Center to facilitate members of the radiation oncology treatment team finding and filling positions; improved membership database providing more automated functions for members and allowing patients to more easily find a radiation oncologist; and a new press room containing all the latest information on the Society including downloadable photos for the media, radiation therapy experts and the most up-to-date news on ASTRO.

This site also features restructured navigation and topic areas to allow access with fewer clicks to sections and an improved search function. The overall structure of the site will allow easy implementation of new technologies and to allow future growth. In redesigning the site, ASTRO also officially moved all its resources for cancer patients to the Society's patient portal, RTanswers.org. This migration will allow patients to find the information they need more easily.

The ASTRO site will continue to grow over the next year with additional phases planned. These phases include an education portion of the site (called the ASTRO School of Radiation Oncology or ASRO) with online learning, pod- and Web-casting and blogging, password protected sections for committee members to share documents and information relevant to their tasks within the Society, and a faculty resource center.

"ASTRO's new Web site is both visually interesting and exceptionally functional," said Laura Thevenot, ASTRO's Chief Executive Officer. "With the hard work of our staff, particularly our Internet Services Manager Amy Kapinus, and input from our members, we hope that this Web site will deliver up-to-date information to our members and the community at large."

ASTRO is the largest radiation oncology society in the world, with more than 8,600 members who specialize in treating patients with radiation therapies. As the leading organization in radiation oncology, biology and physics, the Society is dedicated to the advancement of the practice of radiation oncology by promoting excellence in patient care, providing opportunities for educational and professional development, promoting research and disseminating research results and representing radiation oncology in a rapidly evolving socioeconomic healthcare environment.
