About Komazawa University
Komazawa University School Corporation has established two universities (Komazawa University and Tomakomai Komazawa University) and two affiliated high schools (Komazawa University Senior High School and Komazawa University Tomakomai High School), at which a fully-rounded academic program is provided and a wide array of research is undertaken. The program and research are based on an academic doctrine expressed as “Gyougaku Ichinyo”, meaning “the Fusion of Study and Practice”, which is a set of principles grounded in the teachings of Buddha and the spirit of Zen.

Komazawa University is a private university with over 420 years of proud history and rich tradition including an earlier period as a traditional institution of higher learning and over 130 years since its transformation into a modern university in 1882. Currently 15,500 students study in its seven faculties and eight graduate schools, including the Faculty of Health Sciences which provides training to clinical radiologists. The fundamental philosophy of the university is encapsulated in the”Gyougaku Ichinyo” doctrine, that is, “oneness of study and practice”. Gyou and gaku refer to practice and study, respectively. These two elements are considered essential to academic research, as they are inseparable in high-minded Buddhist ethics, that is, it behooves the student to make efforts to develop his or her own character as well as have an unwavering commitment to academic research. The development of one’s own character relies on having an acute insight into the present without unthinkingly following the trends of the times, choosing the path that is right for oneself as well as gaining knowledge and skills, while obtaining the certifications that are necessary for one’s career.
