IBA, a Belgium-based leader in particle accelerator technology, has signed a term sheet with Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd. (AHEL) for the supply of one Proteus®ONE proton therapy system, with an option for a second unit. The agreement builds on the companies’ existing collaboration and aims to expand access to proton therapy in India.

Apollo Hospitals introduced India's first proton therapy center in 2019 using IBA’s Proteus®PLUS system. The newly agreed-upon Proteus®ONE system, a compact proton therapy solution, is expected to begin treating patients by 2028. The system will feature IBA’s DynamicARC® beam delivery technology once regulatory clearance is obtained.

Olivier Legrain, CEO of IBA, highlighted the significance of the agreement, stating, "These contracts expand upon the close relationship we have built for more than a decade with Apollo Hospitals. Having an existing customer reaffirm their confidence in our solutions demonstrates not only the reliability and superiority of the IBA portfolio but also highlights the level of excellence of the services we deliver."

Dr. Prathap C Reddy, founder and chairman of Apollo Hospitals, emphasized the hospital group's commitment to advanced medical technologies. "In 2019, Apollo commissioned the first proton therapy system in India, and to date, we have treated over 2,000 patients from more than 147 countries. We are excited to partner with IBA again as we expand our proton therapy treatment capacity," he said.

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy that targets tumors with greater precision than traditional X-ray radiation, potentially reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The typical cost of a Proteus®ONE system, including a multi-year maintenance contract, ranges between €35 million and €45 million.

Apollo Hospitals operates India's largest healthcare network, with 73 hospitals and a global patient base. IBA, headquartered in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, is a leading provider of proton therapy solutions and other accelerator-based technologies.
