AMA Salutes Public Officials for Dedication to Health Care

WASHINGTON -- The American Medical Association (AMA) announces eight recipients of the 2007 Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service -- the highest award for a public official from the nation's largest physician organization.

"Through the Nathan Davis Awards, the American Medical Association salutes government officials that go above and beyond the call of duty to improve public health," said AMA President William G. Plested, MD. "Award winners come from every branch of government service, and are a testament to the important role public officials play in creating and implementing health policy that benefits Americans."

The recipients of this year's awards are:

# The Honorable Sherrod Brown, formerly representing the 13th District of Ohio

Member of a State Legislature
# The Honorable Toni Harp, representing Connecticut's 10th Senatorial District
# The Honorable William R. Purcell, MD, representing North Carolina's 25th Senatorial District

Member of Executive Branch serving by Presidential Appointment
# Margaret Giannini, MD, director, Health and Human Service Office on Disability

Member of Executive Branch in Career Public Service
# Doug Lowy, MD, chief, Laboratory of Cellular Oncology, Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute
# John Schiller, Ph.D., head, Neoplastic Disease Section, Laboratory of Cellular Oncology, Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute

Career Public Servant at the Local Level
# Dora Ann Mills, MD, MPH, director, Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Through these awards, the AMA recognizes the highest public service standards throughout all levels of government. The awards are granted in seven categories of public service, and are recognized nationally as one of the most prestigious honors for government service that advances public health.

The awards were presented recently in conjunction with the AMA National Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C.
