Siemens' Mammomat Inspiration digital
mammography system
Siemens Healthineers has announced that the FDA approved its High Definition Breast Tomosynthesis solution, available as an option on its Mammomat Inspiration with Tomosynthesis Option digital mammography system.
It builds on this established digital breast tomosynthesis platform, which has the industry’s largest tomo sweep of 50 degrees. In May 2016
it became the first system approved by the FDA for 3-D-only mammograms.
High Definition Breast Tomosynthesis features the new Enhanced Multiple Parameter Iterative Reconstruction (EMPIRE) technology. It’s a combination of iterative and machine learning algorithms that generates a clearer and more precise 3-D reconstruction.

Siemens designed the EMPIRE technology to reduce noise and artifacts, and made improvements in the detection and display of microcalcification morphologies, and the visualization of subcutaneous tissue and the skin line.
Even though EMPIRE is approved for 3-D-only exams, it can also be used with Siemens’ Insight 2D and Insight 3D. With Insight 2D, breast imagers can generate a 2-D image from the EMPIRE 3-D image set, which provides them with a navigation support tool for 3-D-only exams; and Insight 3-D provides deeper visualization of the breast anatomy.
“Siemens Healthineers is proud to offer High-Definition Breast Tomosynthesis to help our customers increase cancer detection without the need for a 2-D image,” Martin Silverman, VP of X-ray products at Siemens, said in a statement. “Our new EMPIRE technology can help breast imagers achieve better clarity in both image contrast and detail.”
