Minnesota-based Med-chanics, (www.medchanics.com) which provides mobile repair and refurbishment services for diagnostic imaging vehicles throughout the continental U.S., will be making their first venture into the world of manufacturing this year.

Med-chanics is helping one of its customers, DMS Imaging -- whose portable division specializes in providing imaging services to nursing homes and other long-term care facilities -- build a customized, light-duty self-contained mobile wireless X-ray vehicle. The vehicle will have an office that contains cabinetry and a full-size desk, a ceiling fan, a dimmable lighting system, and a space heater. X-ray vans currently available on the market are much more rudimentary. As described by Tom Kolyer, the owner of Med-chanics, "they're cargo vans with insulation hanging out and a picnic table holding your computer."

This experimental project is part of a potential move at Med-chanics to expand from service and refurbishment and include manufacturing. According to Kolyer, the need for high-quality work is fueling his company's expansion--expansion not just of the services they provide, but also of the geographic area they cover. The Internet has also helped Med-chanics reach more and more customers. DOTmed, for example, has enabled Kolyer to build relationships with fleet managers who are DOTmed users, and has supplemented the business he gains through word-of-mouth.

The Med-chanics-designed vehicle will have a motorized lift to help move the imaging equipment and will have an operating time of approximately nine hours (that includes powering a desktop computer).

The van will also drastically reduce the time it takes the results of the x-ray examination to reach the customer. The X-rays will be wirelessly transmitted to a radiologist, who in turn can send his or her report back to the printer in the van, all before the patient leaves.

Upon the completion of this first X-ray vehicle, Med-chanics will be manufacturing additional units for DMS Imaging, and potentially other organizations as well.
