The program intensively trains general dentists by providing advanced training and experience in hospital dentistry, oral surgery, general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, removable and fixed prosthodontics, endodontics and periodontics.

1. Improve the resident's clinical skills and knowledge in all aspects of dentistry.
2. Prepare residents to serve their community as primary oral health care providers for patients with complex dental needs.
3. Train the resident to function effectively in a hospital setting.
4. Train residents to participate in interdisciplinary management of medically compromised patients.
5. Become proficient in the management of dental emergencies.
6. Become competent in the initial management of medical emergencies that may arise in the dental office.

Rotations

Anesthesia: During this 5-week rotation, the resident gains experience in induction of general anesthesia, airway management, intubation, IV sedation, and patient monitoring.

General Dentistry:This rotation provides residents with an incredible educational opportunity to treatment plan and provides comprehensive dental care to patients with complex medical and dental disease.

Emergency Medicine:One week is spent in the Emergency Department observing and assisting in the management of various medical emergencies,including allergic reactions,acute MI, cardiac arrest, and trauma.

Medicine: During this 2-week rotation the residents will have the opportunity to observe the physical manifestations of various diseases.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery:The resident will gain experience doing routine extractions, third molar extractions, pre-prosthetic surgery, and the management of odontogenic infections.

Program Goals
It is the goal of Hennepin County Medical Center's General Practice Residency Program to produce general dentists with advanced skills in order to better serve a diverse community and practice as a part of a total health care team.

Curriculum
In addition to clinical experience and hospital rotations, residents will be participating in a variety of courses and seminars throughout the residency year. The courses and seminars supplement the clinical experience in order to assure that the program's purpose and objectives are achieved.
