LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC) will break ground this Saturday on a new urgent care center that will more than double the size of the current orthopaedic trauma wing. OIC President and CEO Anthony Scaduto, M.D., will be joined by alumni from the Los Angeles Dodgers and hundreds of children at the event.

The groundbreaking is the first phase of a new construction project funded in part by the New Market Tax Credit Program, which is designed to stimulate capital markets investment in low-income communities throughout the country. It will be followed by the building of a new physical therapy department and seven new research laboratories.

A number of infrastructure upgrades will also be included in the master project as many of the current facilities on OIC’s downtown campus are more than 50 years old. The various phases of the construction will be sequenced to allow for all of the existing programs and services to remain open and fully operational during the construction projects.

“This project will create good local jobs, both temporary construction jobs as well as permanent medical and administrative positions, as each phase of the project is completed,” said Dr. Scaduto. “It will also expand and improve medical services to the community as well as enhance educational opportunities for our partner school, the Orthopaedic Medical Magnet High School.” Toward that end as part of the ceremonies, Dr. Scaduto will be announcing a $5,000 investment gift from OIC to the school.

The groundbreaking ceremony is part of the annual “Birthday Bash” for Ozzie, OIC’s well-known mascot. Hundreds of children from the community, along with their families, will be on hand for the “fun and fitness” carnival that will include games, booths, fitness activities and a special gift from the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation.
