Faxitron announced on Tuesday that its VersaVision digital specimen radiography system scored FDA clearance for imaging core biopsy and surgically excised specimen samples.

The system immediately generates high-quality images and displays them on a high-resolution 24-inch monitor.

"It has been designed to deliver instant imaging and verification of samples, which facilitates an improved clinical experience for providers and patients," Donogh O'Driscoll, chief financial officer and chief operating officer at Faxitron, told HCB News.
The VersaVision features a proprietary detector that enables five times more geometric magnification than other systems on the market.

According to Faxitron, it's the only dedicated specimen imaging company that designs and produces its own detectors. That's done at its factory in Tucson, Arizona.

"Detectors are the key component of any radiographic imaging system and we are passionate about producing best-in-class detectors," said O'Driscoll. "Designing and producing our own detectors ensures the highest level of imaging quality control."

The compact, lightweight X-ray cabinet can be placed directly on the bench top in a facility's radiology department, since it comes fully shielded. It also plugs into any A/C outlet and is powered on with the press of a button.

The system can automatically select the right exposure time and kV settings for each sample and features auto object detection for error-free calibration. It also allows multiple annotated images to be sent directly to PACS.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital are a few of the cancer centers in the U.S. that are using multiple Faxitron systems.
