The Geriatrics Fellowship
proveds the social knowledge
of care of the older adult
The fellowship is fully accredited by the Residency Review Committee (RRC). They accept board certified or board eligible family physicians or internists for this one year fellowship. Successful completion of the program leads to eligibility to sit for the geriatric medicine added qualifications examination (CAQ) of the American Board of Family Practice and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Curriculum

Acute Care component focuses on inpatient rounding on the geriatric service (consisting of patients admitted from the MAHEC Family Health Center, the Long Term Acute Care Service, and residents of our two retirement communities. All hospital admissions occur at Mission Hospitals. Other inpatient (and outpatient) experiences include rotations on physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, geropsychiatry, cardiology, palliative care and hospice.

Community Care component consists of supervised continuity ambulatory care and geriatric assessments at the Givens Estates Retirement Community and the Deerfield Retirement Community and the MAHEC Family Health Center. A focus will be on efficient integration of quality Geriatric care into the primary care practice setting.

Curriculum - Sample Schedule

Meeting & Session
Ongoing activities for all fellows will include weekly interdisciplinary team meetings and educational sessions. A lecture/discussion series on both clinical and practice management topics in Geriatrics is provided and fellows are expected to prepare and present monthly seminars and Journal Club reviews.

Application Process & Eligibility
- Must have satisfactorily completed a family medicine or internal medicine residency program, have DEA certification and be eligible to obtain a license to practice medicine in North Carolina through the N.C. Medical Board.

- MustMAHEC have a full copy of applicant's medical school degree, current licensure information, 3-letters of recommendation including one from their residency program director, and an onsite interview in Asheville.

International Medical Graduates
- Must have ECFMG certification, J-1 visa status documentation, and must be eligible for licensure in North Carolina (North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners requires for licensure that foreign medical graduates, or graduates of medical school not approved by the ACGME or the American Osteopathic Association, complete three years of post graduate training in the U.S. or Canada.) MAHEC also requires a high level of English language skills.
