FDA gives nod to Siemens’ GoKnee3D MR application

A new MR application is set to enable evaluations of the knee in 3-D, while cutting diagnostic exam time down to as low as ten minutes.

Siemens Healthineers is preparing to release its GoKnee3D solution into the U.S. market following FDA clearance, a move that will allow physicians to analyze knees with just the push of a button.

“A typical standard knee exam roughly takes about 20 minutes. Basically, it’s a 2-D knee exam so it has two contrasts and three planes,” Samantha Stein, MR product manager for Siemens, told HCB News. “With the GoKnee3D, we’ve not only been able to add another dimension to that so it’s 3-D instead of 2-D, but we’ve also been able to reduce the amount of time by half. You’re getting not only a better visualization of the knee, but you’re able to conduct an exam in a shorter amount of time.”

The solution is the second application developed as part of Siemens’ GO technology family, the first of which, GOBrain, was cleared for use by the FDA in April, 2016, following its debut at the 2015 RSNA annual conference.

GOKnee3D utilizes Siemens’ Large Joint Dot (Day Optimizing Throughput) engine’s auto-align feature to provide push-button functionality with high consistency in imaging.

It also enables faster imaging of the knee with all essential clinical contrasts and image reading in all planes, including double oblique and curved planar, with Siemens’ E11C AP04 software and the Tim 4G high density dedicated knee coil.

Such capabilities enable reduced exam and waiting times with improvements in patient experience.

“We’ve created a quick push button exam that reduces time so that our customers can analyze these frequently conducted exams at a faster rate,” said Stein. “The reason why we picked the knee is because it’s the third most frequently conducted MR exam based on what we’ve seen on our scanners.”

The application is currently available for use on MAGNETOM Aera 1.5T and the MAGNETOM Skyra 3T MR scanners, with plans to eventually integrate it other scanners in the Siemens’ portfolio.

Examination on 3T scanners is ten minutes with the solution and up to 11 minutes on 1.5T systems.
