In conjunction with national Patient Safety Awareness Week, the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) announced today that the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) has provided financial support to RO-ILS: Radiation Oncology Incident Learning System®, a national patient safety initiative sponsored by ASTRO and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).

RO-ILS® facilitates safer and higher quality care in radiation oncology by providing a mechanism for shared learning in a secure and non-punitive environment. It is the only medical specialty society-sponsored radiation oncology incident learning system within a federally listed Patient Safety Organization (PSO).

The ASRT is a professional association for individuals who work in radiologic technology, including radiation therapists and medical imaging specialists. Previous collaborations between ASTRO and the ASRT include a white paper outlining best practices for quality and safety in image-guided radiation therapy and the Safety is No Accident framework for quality care in radiation oncology.

RO-ILS® is an online portal for radiation oncology centers to record non-patient-specific data about safety events, including incidents, near misses, and operational process improvement suggestions related to radiation therapy. Since its 2014 launch, 425 radiation therapy facilities from 47 states have enrolled in RO-ILS®, and facilities have submitted more than 5,300 events. Clarity PSO and the Radiation Oncology Healthcare Advisory Council (RO-HAC), a panel of multidisciplinary experts in radiation oncology, work together to aggregate, analyze and interpret the data submitted into RO-ILS® and regularly publish aggregate reports to educate the radiation oncology community about how to improve safety and patient care. There are no fees for centers to participate in RO-ILS®.

“With its generous financial support, the American Society for Radiologic Technologists continues its history of collaborating on patient safety initiatives with ASTRO and will help us sustain free access to RO-ILS® for cancer clinics across the nation,” said Brian Kavanagh, MD, MPH, FASTRO, Chair of ASTRO’s Board of Directors. “Additionally, working with the ASRT and engaging radiation therapists in an advisory capacity strengthens the multidisciplinary nature of this nationwide patient safety effort.”
