CHICAGO -- The American Medical Association announced the re-election of Edward L. Langston, MD, to the AMA Board of Trustees, and the beginning of his term as AMA Board Chair. Dr. Langston is a practicing family physician from Lafayette, Ind., who has been a member of the AMA House of Delegates since 1987.

"I look forward to continuing my work on behalf of the AMA to provide the best care for America's patients," said Dr. Langston. "I am committed to listening and making informed decisions to help serve doctors and patients."

Dr. Langston is a champion for access to health care, advocacy for patients, and action for a stronger AMA. In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Langston serves as coordinator and secretary of the Lafayette Medical Education Foundation and as a clinical assistant professor at the Purdue School of Pharmacy.

Since 2005, he has served as a commissioner on the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The Commission evaluates and accredits nearly 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States and is the nation's predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.

Previously, Dr. Langston served as vice president of the American Academy of Family Physicians (1994) and as president of the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians (1982-1983). Also trained as a pharmacist, Dr. Langston was a trustee of the United States Pharmacopeia (1995-2000).
