Vizient concerned by probable negative impact of tariffs on the U.S. healthcare industry

IRVING, Texas, June 22, 2018—Vizient is deeply concerned that current tariffs set to go into effect on July 6, and any ensuing trade war, will have long term impacts on the cost of health care in the U.S., which is already at unsustainably high levels.

Every day we work to ensure that patients have access to the best possible suppliers and services for first-rate medical care. That is why we are troubled to see that a 25% tariff will be placed on medical/surgical products imported from China, including many lifesaving items.

While the full effect is not yet known, these tariffs on goods essential to modern medicine could rob the supply chain of important products and exacerbate existing shortages. The resulting impacts may also affect the quality of care hospitals can deliver and make it even tougher for American families already struggling to afford medical care.

We firmly believe that medical care should be above politics. It is our hope that this issue will have a speedy resolution so care delivery in the U.S. is not impacted.
