WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) issued the following statement from President and CEO Scott Whitaker as President Trump signed the Opioid Crisis Response Act of 2018 that would address the opioid crisis:
“Millions of Americans are currently suffering from opioid addiction. AdvaMed applauds President Trump and his administration for its leadership in driving action to quell the opioid epidemic. By signing this landmark legislation today, the President has cemented the pivotal role medical technology has to play in combating the opioid crisis.
“We also applaud members of the House and Senate who collaborated to put together a comprehensive legislative package designed to take a multi-faceted approach to this crisis impacting so many American families.

“This sweeping legislation puts measures in place that will allow the health care industry to more fully leverage innovative medical technology to treat and prevent opioid addiction. The FDA has approved over 200 medical device alternatives that can help manage pain and more are in the pipeline. However, these devices are not necessarily reaching patients as broadly as they could be. This legislation addresses this issue by calling for more education and awareness for non-opioid medical technology solutions and creates clear avenues for FDA approval so that break-through devices can get to patients who need them faster and more efficiently.
“On behalf of the medical technology industry, we look forward to serving as an active partner alongside patients, providers, payers and other stakeholders, as we all work together on solutions to address the opioid crisis.”
