To celebrate this 25th anniversary in style, the former traditional opening ceremony will be completely 'refurbished', so to say, and in its new format as a magnificent inauguration, it will embody the ECR 2019 slogan 'the bigger picture' and the congress's perpetual pursuit for excellence and innovation. Furthermore, the ESR has chosen a specific motto for the Grand Opening – 'Five Senses'. The five senses will permeate the whole Grand Opening; special scents will be created to set a unique atmosphere; the eyes will be entertained with a spectacular stage & light design by the brilliant visual artist Amra Bergman; and there will be music throughout, reflecting the dignitaries' favourite tunes.

As every year the ESR support programmes Invest in the Youth and Shape Your Skills were highly popular and the ESR is glad to report that all together more than 1,200 young professionals and radiographers will be given free congress registration and an accommodation voucher.


Education, science and training at the highest level are an ECR trademark and the 2019 congress will again offer insights into the latest trends in radiology.

"The ECR programme committees have worked hard to present a programme that includes every aspect of medical imaging, including the latest highlights and trends, but also basic training and refresher courses for professionals of all career stages. The famous New Horizons Sessions put the spotlight on the role of imaging in the era of liquid biopsy, artificial intelligence driven by radiologists and the tumour board of the future. Artificial intelligence will run as a common thread through the entire programme and will also be presented in its own area within the technical exhibition called the 'AI Theatre'. Some of the most popular and interesting sessions, which I highly recommend to attend, will be the multidisciplinary sessions, in which radiologists and clinicians together, will discuss their diagnostic and therapeutic approach to patients with a specific pathologic condition," said ESR President Professor Lorenzo Derchi, from Genoa, Italy, providing a preview to some of the ECR 2019 scientific highlights.

A fixed point at ECR, since its introduction three years ago, is the Voice of EPOS™, which will again offer a platform for poster authors to present their work in a moderated poster session to an international audience at ECR 2019.

After their highly successful debut at ECR 2018, the 'Coffee & Talk' sessions, which take place in a relaxed atmosphere in one of the Austria Center's stylish lounges, featuring short lectures and discussions, will return. Participants are welcomed and encouraged to stop by and contribute to the informal discussions while sipping their coffee or tea.
