WASHINGTON, D.C. – Scott Whitaker, president and CEO of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), issued the following statement on CMS’s FY 2020 Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) final rule:
“Today’s rule will help ensure that America’s seniors can more quickly access breakthrough innovations in medical technology that improve outcomes and patients’ lives. We thank HHS Secretary Azar, CMS Administrator Verma, and the Administration for the importance they have placed on improving patient access to the latest medtech treatments and cures, and we commend their hard work and that of their staffs.
"By making the process more seamless for FDA-designated breakthrough technologies to qualify for New Technology Add-on Payments (NTAP), and by increasing the NTAP payment levels, CMS is both shoring up hospitals’ ability to offer these life changing innovations and sending a strong message throughout the innovation ecosystem that taking risks to develop new breakthroughs will be supported.

"The policies facilitating access to breakthrough innovations in this rule reflect several AdvaMed priorities, and bode well for similar provisions that have been proposed in CMS’s 2020 Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) proposed rule.
“We look forward to working closely with CMS on implementation of the final rule, and additional ways to facilitate greater efficiencies in the coverage and payment process.”
