The Nuclear Medicine Department
at William Beaumont Hospital
is one of the largest
in the midwest.
This program is comprehensive education and training in nuclear medicine, including the handling of radioactive materials and performance of diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures.

Curriculum
The program is three years in length for those residents who have completed one year of ACGME accredited training in a clinical specialty or a Transitional Year. It is two years in length for those candidates who have completed a residency in a clinical specialty and are board-eligible or board-certified in that specialty. It is one year in length for those candidates who have completed a residency in diagnostic radiology.

Didactic
Didactic instruction consists of weekly lectures by faculty on basic and clinical science of nuclear medicine, daily teaching sessions with staff physicians, a physics course, a computer lecture mini-series and a radiation biology course. Weekly and monthly conferences include journal club, interesting case conference and PET case conference.

Reserch
Clinical research is strongly encouraged. Opportunities for presentation include regional and national conferences (e.g., SNM, RSNA). Elective time for research can be arranged on an individual basis. Resident research grants can be obtained from the institution.

The training program meets the requirements of the Residency Review Committee in Nuclear Medicine and is ACGME accredited.

Scope of Service
The department offers a wide spectrum of nuclear medicine services, including a full gamut of imaging procedures, in-vivo non-imaging procedures, PET/CT, thyroid clinic and radionuclide therapy. The ratio of outpatients to inpatients is approximately 60 to 40. The department is equipped with 13 gamma cameras (10 SPECT), a PET/CT scanner, a cyclotron, a DEXA scanner, an uptake probe, a well counter and a liquid scintillation counter.
