Laser Scientific is the largest aftermarket manufacturer of GentleLASE repair parts, a widely used hair removal platform. The company makes fiber optics, hand pieces, mechanical parts, electronic and energy-detection circuits -- even builds the laser head itself.

"Every day we strive to reduce the operating costs of these cosmetic lasers," said John Crownover, owner of Laser Scientific, near Austin, Texas. "Hair removal lasers are high-energy-delivery machines and they can go down suddenly. The OEM is not offering economical parts and service. We manufacture parts and sell them at a fair price, as well as doing field repairs."

As Physicians suffer shrinking insurance reimbursements many are looking for new revenue streams. In addition to physicians, customers for cosmetic lasers include medi-spas, which are popping up all over the country, offering laser hair removal and skin treatments. These medi-spas represent a burgeoning segment of the health and cosmetic service industry. Together these trends are fostering growth for Laser Scientific, which specializes in Candela and Cynosure lasers.

"These are all voluntary procedures outside of the managed care umbrella. It's a competitive market. Hair removal is quite popular for providers to offer," Crownover noted. "There are so many [lasers in operation] that the OEM can't possibly service them all and sometimes show little interest in servicing the existing machines in the field."

This keeps Laser Scientific busy as the company buys, sells and services equipment and manufactures new repair parts. Customers are located worldwide including about 25% outside the U.S.

DOTmed plays an important role for the company. "Our presence and participation on DOTmed is extremely important to our company." Crownover said. "The DOTmed Certified program helps to differentiate Laser Scientific from other independents in the laser business, because it demonstrates the importance we place on customer satisfaction."
