Getinge is ramping up its production of ventilators by 160% to help providers attend to the rising number of COVID-19 patients in need.

The increase in production brings ventilator capacity to 26,000, compared to the 10,000 the company developed in 2019.

“We continue to ramp up to be able to respond to the increasing demand from our customers”, says Elin Frostehav, vice president Critical Care at Getinge. “We work closely with our subcontractors and the ramp-up is, of course, pending availability of supply parts”.

The Swedish company initially ramped up production by 60% in March to produce 16,000 ventilators. It has done so once more to meet the increasing demands for advanced ventilators by hospital intensive care units, many of which are filled beyond capacity with patients who have severe cases of COVID-19.

Like Gentinge, a number of companies have stepped up ventilator production to help alleviate global shortages during the pandemic. GE Healthcare recently ramped up ventilator production to a round-the-clock schedule. Philips also has increased ventilator production and plans to achieve a four-fold increase by the third quarter of 2020.

Production for Getinge will take place at its facility in Solna, Sweden. The estimated increase in demand and production capacity of ventilators expected to be accretive to Getinge’s result.

The ramp-up will commence immediately and progress in close collaboration with Getinge’s suppliers.
