Rosslyn, VA– The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) submitted a letter to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommending the agency reference the recently issued Fleischner Consensus in interim guidance to healthcare providers. To support informed, evidence-based policy during a fast-moving public health emergency, MITA also requested the establishment of an ongoing partnership with the CDC, as well as other public health organizations, to support the broad dissemination of the latest research on imaging in the COVID-19 diagnostic and treatment spaces.
“Given the unprecedented scope of the present crisis, we believe that dedicated cooperation among clinical researchers, industry experts, and public health institutions will be moreimportant than ever,” said Patrick Hope, executive director of MITA. “It is imperative that emerging evidence be rapidly and critically assessed then shared on a regular basis to provide healthcare providers with the most current scientific literature.”
Along with providing a detailed bibliography, the letter also highlighted a selection of the latest evidence, guidelines, consensus statements, and policy resources on medical imaging in the COVID-19 treatment pathway. These include the recently issued multinational consensus statement from the Fleischner Society, which represents the collective opinions of leading clinical experts practicing in countries hard-hit by the virus. Taken among other topline recommendations and guidelines, including a list of resources recently published by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), MITA recommended that the CDC reference both the Fleischner Consensus and the AIUM in the next interim Guidance for Clinicians.
