Come August, Utah residents will be heading to CVS instead of Intermountain Healthcare for their pharmaceutical needs, following the healthcare provider’s decision to shut down 25 of its retail pharmacies.
Intermountain will transfer prescriptions and inventory to CVS pharmacy and will only operate its home delivery pharmacy, special pharmacy, and its Primary Children’s Hospital retail pharmacy location.
“Every effort will be made to ensure patients and employees are well cared for during this transition. We’ve seen changes in consumer preference in obtaining medications in retail pharmacies that offer added convenience and expanded shopping options,” said Nannette Berensen, vice president and COO of Intermountain Shared Clinical Services, in a statement.

Driving the closures is low usage by area residents. Inpatient pharmacies will not be affected, and Intermountain will continue to offer medication management services and assistance, as well as financial support services. Intermountain will work with all employees impacted to identify opportunities for them. They will have the option to transition to other roles within Intermountain, and be considered for positions at local CVS Pharmacy locations.
Pharmacy files for each location will be securely and confidentially transferred to conveniently located retail pharmacy locations, with CVS Pharmacy working with all new patients to ensure they continue to have access to their medications without disruption.
“We are looking forward to introducing our industry-leading products and services to these new patients, and are committed to ensuring that their pharmacy needs are not only met but exceeded,” said David Royster, regional director of CVS Pharmacy.
A letter explaining the closures, prescription-transfer process, timeline and information on whom to contact with questions will be sent to patients.
