"I was going to make a career change into networking but I started getting referrals from people who needed Picker or Marconi equipment serviced," Adams said of the birth of his company. "Everything took off just by word of mouth."

As it happens, reputation and word of mouth are critically important in the refurbished medical equipment industry.

"I would advise refurbishers to have a full system audit before they buy," he stressed. "Send somebody out that they trust and that knows the machine to have all the problems discovered and the machine's condition known before it winds up in somebody's hands."

Adams related a tale from the trenches in which a clinician invested in a CT system and bolted it into a mobile unit without a thorough audit. "If you tried the fastest scan it sounded like a V-8 engine with no muffler," Adams said. The machine's worn scan motor bearings required disassembly; an audit would have uncovered the problem. "The same goes for site planning. If you're a broker and you don't know how to set up an MRI system site by the book, consult somebody that does so you don't get sued."

Adams's work takes him around the world, with projects in India, South Korea, Switzerland, Ecuador, and Jamaica. "I am not trying to sell quantity. I am trying to sell quality," he said. "To make people feel like they get what they pay for. That's my goal. A good business transaction where both people are happy and you might even get referrals from it."
