MAQUET Medical Systems, headquartered in Rastatt, Germany, part of the publicly listed Swedish group of companies known as GETINGE AB, recently created a new cardiovascular division formed by combining its MAQUET Cardiopulmonary unit with Boston Scientific's Vascular Surgery and Cardiac Surgery divisions. The latter includes the products and services of Guidant Cardiac Surgery.

MAQUET Cardiovascular LLC enables the company to offer a comprehensive array of patient care solutions for less-invasive endoscopic harvesting, off-and-on-pump coronary bypass surgery, and vascular grafts.

The HEARTSTRING III Proximal Seal System represents the most recent innovative version of its coronary bypass technology, allowing surgeons to perform coronary artery bypass grafts without the use of a partial occlusion clamp during beating heart surgery.

Launched this week, the HEARTSTRING III features an improved seal loader and delivery device for fast, easy placement. Once deployed, it maintains a low compliant profile for optimal hemostasis at the anastomotic site. Surgeons are able to use their own hand-suturing technique for creating a proximal seal with either a venous or arterial graft. Its elegant design and small operational footprint leaves no foreign material inside the vessel while allowing for maximum surgical flexibility.

Benefits of clampless beating heart surgery, also known as off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) include quicker recovery time, decreased length of hospital stay, less trauma and fewer cognitive and neurological consequences.

Notes Patrick Walsh, president of MAQUET Cardiovascular LLC, "This advancement of our HEARTSTRING product line represents yet another development in our integrated approach to providing innovative surgical solutions for cardiac and vascular surgeons, perfusionists and their teams in order to help patients live better and longer lives."
