Catholic health system Bon Secours has begun the groundwork for building its $80 million Bon Secours Harbour View Hospital in Suffolk, Virginia.

The health system’s leaders kicked off the work with a groundbreaking ceremony on October 26 for the 98,000-square-foot hospital, which will adjoin Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View campus.

Primarily serving communities in northern Suffolk and western Hampton Roads, the new facility will comprise 18 medical and surgical inpatient beds and up to four operating rooms. It also will house a 15-bed emergency department, on-site lab services, and CT, MR, and X-ray imaging.

It is expected to be completed by 2025. “This hospital will make a significant difference for the residents of Suffolk who will be able to receive advanced surgical care in their own community,” said Pat Davis-Hagens, market president of Bon Secours Hampton Roads, in a statement.

While most surgeries will be scheduled ahead of time, walk-in patients in the ED will have access to on-site services, including surgery, when appropriate.

The hospital will also reduce the need for Suffolk patients to travel to other cities for care. Additionally, Bon Secours Hampton Roads network of hospitals and care centers will be accessible to patients with more acute needs.

Started in 1999, Bon Secours Health Center at Habour View was the first healthcare facility built to care for the needs of the growing population in western Hampton Roads, providing outpatient services to its residents. It currently offers an ED, outpatient imaging, outpatient lab services, an ambulatory surgery center, and physician practices.

The decision to establish Bon Secours Harbour View Hospital was in response to demand for acute care hospital beds in Suffolk. It is the fourth hospital for the Bon Secours Hampton Roads market, which includes Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News; Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth; and Bon Secours Southampton Medical Center in Franklin.

The healthcare system secured Certificate of Public Need approval in 2018 for the Bon Secours Habour View Hospital. Champlin Architecture is the architect behind the project, and Hourigan is managing construction.
