Aribex Handheld X-rays Are Finding a Growing Market

Aribex, Inc.
Aribex, Inc. is a manufacturer of handheld X-rays, located in East Orem, UT. The company has been selling the devices for four years. The product line includes the NOMAD and NOMAD Pro for dental applications and the NOMAD eXaminer for veterinary, security and industrial use. The NOMADs are battery-powered handhelds weighing between 5 and 8 lbs.

According to Pete Steinhausen, Director of Sales and Marketing, the NOMAD eXaminer was very successfully used in the aftermath of the Thailand tsunami in 2004. With the NOMAD, identification of victims was easily accomplished, through radiographing the victims' oral cavities. Since the use in Thailand, the eXaminer has been utilized at other global disasters, including areas hit by Hurricane Katrina.

Steinhausen says that handhelds may one day supplement and even replace the traditional wall-mounted units in dental offices. "The use of handheld devices is very much catching on." The handheld unit offers clinical benefits--the accuracy of the images is improved. With a wall unit, a technician can try to take images at the proper angle, but the movements of the device are restricted in movement. The NOMAD may be operated safely in hand for truly correct positioning. The time of exams is also shortened, as well as the number of repeat X-rays. Steinhausen says this leads to better quality treatment and more comfort for the patient. One NOMAD could service two to three dental labs, cutting down the expenses for an office. The dental practitioner can use the NOMAD for either digital or film receptors.

The NOMAD also has a strong potential use in an operating room and/or hospital for dental exams. The device allows for between 200 and 600 exposures. However, at present, the NOMAD is in the testing stage for further medical use with humans.

The NOMAD eXaminer has become very popular for veterinary applications. It is a top choice for veterinarian dental applications and small limb/extremity radiography for cats, small dogs, and birds.

The NOMAD has further potential in security and industrial applications. The price is around $7,000.
