Allegheny Valley Hospital in Pennsylvania, part of Allegheny Health Network, has completed a $12 million expansion and renovation of its imaging and radiology department.

The project has added 8,000 square feet of space and features advanced diagnostic technologies, including 3D mammography, CT, MR, ultrasound, and dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scanning. These upgrades aim to provide more comprehensive diagnostic services for patients in the Allegheny Valley region.

A key addition is a mobile imaging pad located outside the hospital, which supports rotating MR and PET/CT capabilities. The mobile MR unit operates three days a week, offering 40 additional appointment slots weekly, while the PET/CT unit is available every Wednesday and on select Thursdays.

“These upgrades ensure that patients have access to the most accurate and comprehensive diagnostic services close to home,” said Dr. Mark Rubino, president of AVH. He emphasized that the mobile imaging services enhance patient care by improving accessibility and timeliness.

The expansion aligns with national updates to breast cancer screening guidelines, which now recommend that women begin screenings at age 40 instead of 50. AVH's upgraded 3D mammography capabilities and new requirements for informing patients about breast density are designed to improve early detection rates. “Early detection and treatment of breast cancer are essential for helping our patients live their best and healthiest lives,” said Dr. Bethany Casagranda, chair of the AHN Imaging Institute.

The renovation also modernized the department’s physical space to enhance patient comfort. Upgraded check-in and check-out areas, expanded waiting rooms, and ADA-compliant dressing rooms reflect AHN’s commitment to patient-centered care.

This expansion is part of AHN and Highmark Health’s broader investment in imaging services across western Pennsylvania, with new imaging facilities recently opened at Bethel Park and upcoming centers at Jefferson and Allegheny General hospitals.
